Special Care For Finches

Some people get a finch with special needs and need to adapt to the bird’s special needs, others want to adopt a finch with special needs because they now nobody else wants them and a challenged bird deserves a good home just like the next bird. Also, old finches tend to sleep a lot, they are not as active and merry as the young ones.

Unlike other disabled birds, finches cannot really crawl up and down the cage using their beak and toes. So unless they can find a way to maintain balance so as to get water and food by themselves they are very likely to perish. It’s always a good idea to find new and innovative ways in which to modify and adapt the cage of a finch with special needs. First of all make sure that the cage is big enough for two birds and get your finch friend a companion. Birds with special needs find it easier to cope with their problems if they have one of their own around.

If your finch cannot fly or cannot walk due to broken leg or missing toes or other problems, make sure the dishes containing food and water are within its reach. It will need to hop to get what it needs so don’t place items of great interest and need to far away, no matter how big the cage is. Arthritis is another common problem with finches. Some of them damage their eyes in fights with other birds and others just lose their eyesight as a result of old age.

In any case, remember that if your finch was injured a long time ago, it probably adapted its own routine to cope with the problem. If the injure, however, is recent, you need to provide help and support. Always remember to consult a veterinarian in serious health matters so as your bird is out of any life threatening danger.
